Kruidnoten Recipe - The Dutch Christmas Cookie Kruidnoten, and its evil twin Pepernoten, is symbol of Christmas time in the Netherlands. These little Dutch spice cookies start appearing in stores in late October and are a sign that Sinterklaas is coming. Sinterklaas is St Nicholas, and his band of merry and mischievous helpers are called Zwarte Piets. It is the Zwarte Piets that hands out Kruidnoten to the little children who cups their hands and receive the baked gifts with glee. Dutch children leave their shoes near the fireplace or radiator on Dec 5th in hopes that Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piets will fill them up with candy. In return the children will leave a carrot for Sinterklass' horse and maybe even some Kruidnoter or Pepernoten for old Sint himself. Kruidnoten and Pepernoten and very small cookies, bite size in fact. Pepernoten are the "spicier" of the two with a handful of more flavor spices than kruidnoten. In appearance, both cookies should be no bigger than the size of a US 25 cent quarter or a 2 euro coin. They are dense so despite their size they do take a bit longer in the oven than you would think. They should be a medium to dark golden brown. You can variations to kruidnoten, but pepernoten already have a symphony of spices in them. Besides if you made pepernoten, you made them for the spice mixture in them so why sully it with anything else. Kruidnoten are often found dipped in milk, dark and white chocolate. Along with some plain kruidnoten, this mixture of color looks fantastic in a large bowl. The following Dutch cookie recipes will yield around 200 little cookies. Half the recipe if this is too many.
